Abstract (Translated):
This text seeks to offer a critique of the official criteria for the classification of the population according to their place of residence - rural or urban. With arguments based on the normative evolution of this classification and a quantitative exercise in an illustrative way, the text tries to draw attention to the still strong presence of rurality as a characteristic feature of socio-occupational structure of the Brazilian territory.
