This paper focuses on the changes in income and activity sectors on the economically active rural population (EAP) between 1996 and 2006. Besides a brief introduction, its divide into more tree parts. The first part analyzes the changes in income and activity sectors based on the National Household Survey (PNAD) and on Statistics of Employment form them Ministry of Labor, RAIS. We present the evolution of the rural EAP showing how important are nonfarm employment and income for the rural population and the changes occurred during the past 10 years. We also discuss the composition of income according to its origins: rural farm incomes (RFI), rural nonfarm incomes (RNFI), aposentadorias e pensões, and government transfers, as well as the evolution of income inequality. Information of PNAD and RAIS are put together to verify changes in the formal labor market. The second part tackles the same subjects but focusing on the regional differences, were we show that the changes observed are not equally distributed across the country. The last part brings some conclusions and comments about the changes observed.
