Technological development, especially in the area of microcomputer systems, has changed the traditional control equipment and methods of control to such an extent that today's process modernization is much more than the replacement of old equipment with equivalent new equipment at a time when the old equipment has to be replaced. Modern equipment and techniques enable the organization to operate much more effectively and achieve much higher productivity levels. This fact forces a manufacturing firm to carefully study its modernization strategy to decide whether it is still in pace with the rapidly changing technological environment. By means of research at a large manufacturing organization an attempt was made to find answers to questions such as the following: What kind of equipment should be considered in a specific stage of process modernizing?; What influence could new powerful equipment have on the modernization strategy?; How could the organizational structure be influenced?; How should organizations in South Africa school themselves to accept new technology?; What actions should be taken against sanctions?
