Zusammenfassung:
The most important step an academic researcher takes is establishing a methodological framework in which to conduct the research. This step is difficult because there are a wide number of options available and because established researchers often argue passionately for their own particular approach. In this article I discuss the important philosophical questions of why research, what (and where) to research, and how to research. I go on to discuss the main methodological frameworks available to the business and management researcher, and suggest an approach whereby a masters or doctoral student can make a considered decision as to which is best for his/her research. In the article I also suggest a practical approach as to bow to conduct a research programme for a higher degree.
